Search Underway After Empty Vehicle Found in Columbia River
A vehicle crash into the Columbia River early Saturday morning has prompted a full investigation by the Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crash Team (MCT), after the driver was not found at the scene.
At 8:01 a.m. on August 2, officers from Portland Police's North Precinct responded to reports of a crash near Northeast Marine Drive and Northeast 122nd Avenue. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a heavily damaged guardrail and a vehicle overturned in a shallow section of the Columbia River.
Emergency Response and Recovery Efforts
Portland Fire & Rescue, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office River Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard quickly joined the scene to assist in the search and recovery operation. Despite extensive efforts, no occupants were found inside the vehicle or in the surrounding area. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the driver may have exited the vehicle before it entered the water or if a fatality has occurred.
The Portland Police Bureau has confirmed that the vehicle was recovered and towed from the river. Traffic in the area was restricted during the response but has since fully reopened.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Considerations
Given the uncertainty surrounding the driver’s whereabouts and the severity of the incident, the MCT is leading the investigation. Community members with information related to the crash are encouraged to contact the Portland Police Traffic Investigations Unit by emailing crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov (opens in a new tab) and referencing case number 25-207638.
Crashes like this one can raise significant legal questions, especially if it is later determined that another vehicle or roadway hazard contributed to the incident. In situations where negligence may have played a role, individuals or families may have legal claims for personal injury or even wrongful death if a fatality is confirmed.
Area Known for Past Incidents
Northeast Marine Drive is a high-speed corridor that runs along the Columbia River, often frequented by commuters and recreational drivers. Its proximity to water and limited barriers in certain segments have made it a location of concern for traffic safety advocates.
Community Support and Safety Reminders
The Portland Police Bureau expressed gratitude for the support from Portland Fire & Rescue, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coast Guard. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cautious driving, particularly near bodies of water or in areas with limited barriers.
