Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision on Hwy 101 in Coos County Raises Concerns Over Impairment and Speed

Coos County, Oregon | July 9, 2024 - A devastating two-vehicle collision on Highway 101 near milepost 243 in Coos County has once again highlighted the perilous impact of speed and impairment on road safety. The accident, which occurred on Tuesday at 12:27 p.m., involved a southbound Honda HRV and a northbound Range Rover Evoque.

Details of the Crash

The Honda HRV, driven by 85-year-old Richard Swartling of Coos Bay, was attempting a left turn onto Coos-Sumner Lane when it was struck by the Range Rover Evoque, operated by Icel Marie Bair, 45, from Nampa, Idaho. The collision resulted in a side impact that proved fatal for Mr. Swartling, who was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. Ms. Bair sustained serious injuries and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.

The crash caused significant disruptions, closing the highway for approximately five hours as the Oregon State Police (OSP), assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), conducted an on-scene investigation. Early findings suggest that both speed and impairment were contributing factors to the accident.

Legal Implications and Road Safety Concerns

This incident serves as a grave reminder of the dangers posed by impaired and reckless driving. In Oregon, driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) and speeding are serious offenses that can lead to severe legal consequences. Victims of such accidents may have the right to pursue claims for personal injury or even wrongful death if negligence is found to be a factor.

As personal injury attorneys committed to enhancing public safety and advocating for the rights of accident victims, we at Pacific Injury Law Firm urge all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic laws and drive responsibly. The loss of life and the impact on families from such preventable accidents is a stark reminder of the importance of road safety.
