Lane County, Oregon | October 22, 2024
A devastating multi-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 126 in Lane County, Oregon, leading to the death of one woman and causing serious injuries to another individual. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, around 3:15 p.m., when a westbound Kenworth log truck, driven by Billy Lee Bales Coder, experienced a catastrophic engine failure as it passed through the Knowles Creek Tunnel. The engine failure resulted in a 200-yard-long oil slick on the highway, setting off a chain reaction of accidents.
The log truck, operated by Coder, aged 50 from Myrtle Point, came to a halt on the side of the roadway after exiting the tunnel. The oil spill it left behind proved perilous for other drivers on the road. A Nissan Rogue, driven by Mary Helen Dale, 65, of Florence, lost control on the slick and collided with the stationary log truck before veering off the highway.
Further chaos ensued when a Toyota Prius, driven by Radiant Jaime Gaines, 48, from Eugene, also lost control due to the oil. The Prius crossed into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with an eastbound Chevrolet HHR driven by Christine Dorene Weathers, 59, also from Florence. Tragically, Weathers was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gaines sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local medical center for treatment. The operator of the Nissan Rogue, Dale, and the log truck driver, Coder, were not injured in the incident.
The highway was closed for approximately 9.5 hours as Oregon State Police, along with Western Lane Ambulance and Fire, Mapleton Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, conducted a thorough on-scene investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the collision.
