Motorcyclist Dies After Collision and Ambulance Crash in Northeast Portland
A motorcyclist has died following a multi-step emergency response after a collision with a vehicle in Portland’s Woodlawn neighborhood, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).
The initial crash occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, near the intersection of Northeast 15th Avenue and Northeast Lombard Street. Officers from the PPB’s North Precinct responded to reports of a severe crash and found the motorcyclist suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries.
Emergency personnel quickly arranged transport to a local hospital. However, while the ambulance was en route, it was involved in a second crash near Northeast Lombard Street and Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A second ambulance was immediately dispatched to continue the transport. Despite rapid medical intervention and extensive lifesaving efforts, the motorcyclist died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the original crash sustained minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment.
The PPB’s Major Crash Team is investigating both the original collision and the subsequent ambulance crash. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased motorcyclist. Traffic in the affected areas was significantly impacted as investigations unfolded.
Legal and Safety Considerations
This incident raises important questions regarding liability in motorcycle accident injury cases in Oregon. In accidents involving multiple collisions, including those occurring during emergency response, determining fault can become especially complex. Victims of motorcycle accidents and their families may have legal options if negligence by another driver contributed to the crash.
Additionally, the unfortunate sequence of a second crash during ambulance transport underscores the importance of safety protocols during emergency response. In such rare circumstances, questions of liability might also extend to third parties, such as the operators of emergency vehicles, depending on the facts of the case.
In fatal crash situations, surviving family members may be entitled to bring a wrongful death claim under Oregon law. These claims can help families recover damages for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future earnings, and the pain of losing a loved one due to someone else’s negligence.
As the PPB continues its investigation, anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov (opens in a new tab), referencing case number 25-240678.
