A fatal pedestrian accident in Portland’s King Neighborhood claimed the life of 49-year-old DaRon V. Craig and left another man hospitalized with severe injuries, authorities confirmed. The crash occurred on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at approximately 11:46 a.m. on the 5900 block of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, the driver of a silver Ford Escape SUV was traveling northbound when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway, drove onto the east sidewalk just north of Northeast Jessup Street, and struck two pedestrians. A nearby preteen boy narrowly avoided being hit.
After hitting the pedestrians, the driver veered back into traffic, sideswiping a Hyundai SUV waiting in a left-turn lane at Northeast Ainsworth Street. The Ford Escape continued north, driving over the center median and crashing head-on into a Buick sedan and a Toyota pickup.
DaRon V. Craig was pronounced dead at the scene, just north of Northeast Jarrett Street. The second pedestrian, whose name has not been released, sustained extremely serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. As of the most recent update, his condition has stabilized and his injuries are no longer believed to be life-threatening.
In total, at least three other people, including the drivers of the Hyundai and Buick, were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Toyota pickup was not hospitalized.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Ford Escape has two prosthetic legs. However, it remains unclear whether this was a factor in the incident. The vehicle was confirmed to be a standard stock model, with no modifications aside from a platform mounted to the trailer hitch. Driver controls were also found to be standard, not altered to accommodate prosthetics.
No citations have been issued, and no arrests have been made at this time. The Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Investigations Unit (TIU), with assistance from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, continues to investigate the crash to determine whether any criminal liability is present.
