Fatal Crash on NE MLK Jr. Blvd Claims One Pedestrian’s Life, Injures Several Others
A harrowing chain of events on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Portland resulted in the death of one pedestrian and left several others injured in a complex multi-vehicle crash, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The crash occurred just before noon on Thursday, August 7, when the driver of a silver Ford Escape SUV, traveling northbound on NE MLK Jr. Blvd, veered onto the east sidewalk north of NE Jessup Street. In doing so, the vehicle struck two adult male pedestrians and narrowly missed a preteen boy. One of the pedestrians died at the scene near NE Jarrett Street, while the other was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Chain Collision Involving Multiple Vehicles
After striking the pedestrians, the driver re-entered the roadway, continued northbound, and sideswiped a Hyundai SUV stopped in the left turn lane at NE Ainsworth Street. The vehicle then crossed over the median and collided head-on with a southbound Buick sedan and a Toyota pickup.
In total, at least five individuals were hospitalized due to the incident:
- The driver of the Ford Escape was transported with non-life-threatening injuries.
- The driver of the Buick sedan was also taken to the hospital with injuries.
- The Hyundai driver requested ambulance transport.
- The pedestrian survivor remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Toyota pickup did not require hospitalization. No arrests have been made, and no citations have been issued at this time.
Investigation Underway
The Portland Police Traffic Investigations Unit (TIU) is actively investigating the incident. While authorities have stated that there is no indication the crashes were intentional, questions remain about the cause. Notably, the driver of the Ford Escape reportedly has two prosthetic legs, though it is currently unclear if that factor contributed to the series of collisions.
A representative from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Portland Police are encouraging anyone with information to contact the TIU at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov (opens in a new tab) and reference case number 25-212760.
This incident marks Portland’s 20th fatal traffic crash of 2025 and the eighth involving a pedestrian.
Legal Considerations and Public Safety Implications
The devastating loss of life and extensive injuries raise serious legal and safety concerns. If the driver is found to have acted negligently—due either to distraction, impairment, or a failure to maintain control of the vehicle—those injured or the family of the deceased may have grounds for legal claims. These may include wrongful death actions, pedestrian injury claims, or broader personal injury claims depending on the outcomes of the investigation.
Pedestrian crashes in Oregon frequently involve complex liability issues, especially in cases where multiple parties are injured. When a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes pedestrians on a sidewalk, it often suggests a failure to adhere to Oregon’s basic duty of care laws, which require all drivers to operate vehicles safely and attentively.
