Dozens gathered at Gateway Discovery Park in Northeast Portland on Wednesday for a candlelight vigil honoring Lorenzo Araujo and Johan Guerrero, two men who died in separate encounters with ICE agents across the country.
Organizers and attendees called for more transparency around the incidents and for the identities of the ICE agents involved to be made public. Participants lit candles during the event and urged continued support for the families.
Beatriz Ibarra, with Portland Against Deportations, said the gathering reflected a community response to division and fear. Organizers also challenged ICE's account of the incidents. ICE has previously said the men "weaponized their vehicles."
The vigil ended with calls for further investigation into both deaths. For families dealing with a sudden loss after a law enforcement encounter, records, witness accounts, and official findings often matter early, especially if questions remain about what happened and who was involved.
