Fatal Collision on Highway 101 in Tillamook County Highlights Dangers of Unlawful Passing
TILLAMOOK COUNTY, Ore. - A devastating two-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 101 near milepost 146 in Tillamook County this past Monday, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving two others with serious injuries. The Oregon State Police have identified speed and unlawful passing as the primary contributing factors to this fatal incident.
Details of the Accident
According to a preliminary investigation, a Mazda, driven by Devin Jay Eberle, 29, of Tumwater, WA, was heading northbound when it attempted to overtake multiple vehicles in a no-passing zone upon entering a corner. This reckless maneuver led Eberle's vehicle to enter the southbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision with a southbound Toyota Sienna, operated by Kathryn Stolee Olson, 74, of Tacoma, WA.
The impact was catastrophic. Devin Jay Eberle and his passenger, Berkley Marie Erosky, 26, of Vancouver, WA, were pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, Kathryn Stolee Olson and her passenger, David Paul Olson, 78, also of Tacoma, were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.
The crash caused significant disruption, impacting Highway 101 for approximately 2.5 hours as emergency response teams, including Nehalem Fire, Rockaway Fire, Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, and the Manzanita Police Department, conducted their on-scene investigation.
Legal and Safety Implications
This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws, particularly those regulating speed and passing. Unlawful passing in no-pass zones, especially around corners, significantly increases the risk of head-on collisions, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.
