Fatal Early Morning Bicycle Crash in Central Point Raises Safety Concerns on Rural Oregon Roads

A bicyclist was killed early Tuesday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while riding along Foothill Road near the intersection with Corey Road in rural Central Point, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Bicyclist Identified as 45-Year-Old Matthew Edward Davenport

Jackson County authorities have identified the bicyclist as Matthew Edward Davenport, 45, of White City. Emergency responders, including Jackson County Fire District 3 and Mercy Flights, were dispatched following a 911 call placed by the involved driver at 4:44 a.m. Despite efforts to save him, Davenport was pronounced deceased at a local hospital at 5:42 a.m. His next of kin has been notified.

Preliminary Investigation: Vehicle Struck Bicyclist on Shoulder

According to law enforcement, a green 2021 Toyota 4Runner was traveling southbound on Foothill Road when it struck Davenport, who was reportedly riding on the shoulder of the roadway. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. As of now, no criminal charges have been filed.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about contributing factors, such as visibility, lighting conditions, or whether the cyclist was using reflective gear or lighting. The investigation remains ongoing.
