Recent Highway 20 Crashes Highlight Risks of Unsafe Passing and Lane Crossings in Oregon

LINCOLN COUNTY, Oregon | July 2, 2024 - A tragic incident on Highway 20 in Lincoln County resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left three others with serious injuries. According to Oregon State Police (OSP), a Toyota Rav4 attempting an unsafe pass collided with an Acura TL, leading to a multi-vehicle crash involving a Dodge Ram 2500. The accident, which occurred just after 6:30 p.m. near milepost 30, east of Toledo, highlights the perilous outcomes of unsafe driving behaviors.

Jose Manuel Zapata, 29, from Portland, was identified as the driver of the Toyota and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt. Scott Thomas Novotny, 34, from Newport, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The incident also resulted in serious injuries to a passenger in the Toyota and the occupants of the Dodge Ram.

LINN COUNTY, Oregon | July 4, 2024 - Another devastating accident occurred on Highway 20 near milepost 21 in Linn County. A head-on collision between two Dodge Rams led to the death of a 12-year-old boy and serious injuries to two others. The westbound Dodge Ram 1500, driven by 52-year-old Scott Turner, crossed into the opposite lane for unknown reasons and struck a Dodge Ram 2500. The collision resulted in both vehicles sustaining heavy damage, and the younger Dodge Ram became fully engulfed in flames. Turner and the second driver, William Drager, were both hospitalized with serious injuries.

Legal Implications and Safety Measures

These incidents raise significant legal issues concerning negligence and the duty of care owed by drivers on the road. Unsafe passing, failure to secure seatbelts, and losing control of a vehicle can lead to severe penalties and liability under Oregon law. For families affected by such tragedies, pursuing a wrongful death claim may be a course to consider.
