Fatal Motorcycle Crash on South Springwater Road Claims One Life, Critically Injures Passenger

A deadly collision between a motorcycle and a car on a rural Clackamas County road has claimed the life of 64-year-old Brent Bjorkman of Oregon City and left a passenger critically injured, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred around 5:07 p.m. on April 4 in the 24000 block of South Springwater Road, an unincorporated area of Clackamas County. Authorities reported that Bjorkman was riding a 2022 Harley-Davidson cruiser when his motorcycle collided with a 2024 Toyota Camry that was turning into a driveway.

A Clackamas County deputy who arrived on scene immediately began lifesaving efforts on Bjorkman. Despite these efforts, Bjorkman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger on the motorcycle, whose name has not yet been released, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a Portland-area hospital for emergency care. The driver of the Camry was not seriously hurt and has cooperated fully with investigators.

Investigation Underway

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the inter-agency Criminal Reconstruction and Forensic Technicians (CRAFT) team is investigating the crash. The team’s goal is to determine the precise cause of the collision, including whether any traffic violations or signs of negligence may have contributed to the incident.

Multiple agencies provided support at the scene, including Estacada Fire, American Medical Response, Lake Oswego Police Department, Milwaukie Police Department, and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office.

Legal Considerations Under Oregon Law

Motorcycle collisions like this one can raise complex legal issues concerning motorcycle accident injury liability and potential wrongful death claims. Under Oregon law, if the driver of the car is found to have been negligent—such as failing to yield while turning or misjudging the speed of an oncoming motorcycle—the surviving family members of the deceased may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover damages for loss of companionship, lost income, and funeral expenses.

Likewise, the critically injured passenger may have grounds to file a personal injury claim against the at-fault party. This could include compensation for medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Liability in such cases often depends on detailed accident reconstruction and witness accounts.

Motorcycle riders are particularly vulnerable in roadway crashes due to the lack of protective barriers. As such, Oregon law provides robust legal remedies for victims of motorcycle crashes, especially where another driver’s negligence plays a role.

Promoting Motorcycle Safety

This incident underscores the ongoing importance of motorcycle awareness on rural and urban roads alike. Drivers are reminded to exercise heightened caution when making turns across traffic lanes—especially in areas with limited visibility and when motorcycles are present.
