Van Collision Near Oregon Capitol Injures One and Disrupts Utilities

A van crashed into a utility pole at the busy intersection of Center Street Northeast and 17th Street Northeast in Salem on Friday morning, sending one person to the hospital and causing significant disruption to traffic and power infrastructure near the Oregon State Capitol.

The crash occurred just before 11:33 a.m., according to emergency dispatch information from PulsePoint. Salem Police responded to the scene and confirmed that a single individual was transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the incident. The extent of those injuries has not been released, and the identity of the injured person remains undisclosed.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, and no other vehicles have been reported as involved. The investigation is ongoing.

Road Closures and Power Disruptions

Center Street NE was closed to traffic between 14th and 17th Streets NE for several hours following the collision. Portland General Electric (PGE) crews were dispatched to the scene to assess and repair the damaged utility pole. According to PGE repairman Aaron Cain, approximately 60 meters along Statesman Street NE could be impacted by the necessary six-hour replacement process.

Despite the pole damage, PGE reported no active outages in the area as of midday. However, repair work may still temporarily interrupt electrical service for nearby residents and businesses.
