Portland police say five teenage suspects now face felony charges in the 2025 killing of Kevin Cooper, a Portland grandfather and church minister who was shot at his home on November 1, 2025 and died on December 12. The update was published by the Portland Police Bureau after investigators said they had spent months gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and serving search warrants in the case.
According to the bureau, detectives from the Enhanced Community Safety Team, the Major Crimes Unit, and the Homicide Unit worked together as the case developed. Police say the suspects were tied to an invasion of Cooper’s home in front of family members, and that some of the arrests came first on unrelated charges before the murder case moved forward.
The bureau identified the defendants as Zyaire E. Carter, Ty’Davion C. Burton, Jayden J. Sarinana, Jordan C. Perkins, and one juvenile male. Police say the adult suspects remain in the Multnomah County Detention Center, while the juvenile remains in juvenile custody. Charges listed in the update include murder, assault, burglary, robbery-related offenses, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The police update also says the five suspects are being investigated in connection with additional robberies, and more charges may be pending. The bureau included a request for information from the public and gave a tip line tied to case number 25-299606.
For families affected by a violent death, the first practical questions often involve records, deadlines, and the steps needed to preserve evidence for a civil claim. Oregon wrongful death cases often turn on police reports, medical records, and witness information that can be lost if no one gathers it early. A Wrongful Death (opens in a new tab) review can help families understand those issues after a fatal shooting.
