Heroic Efforts by Oregon City Man Saves Life After Horrific Crash

In the early hours of a rainy morning in Portland, Oregon, an unexpected act of heroism unfolded on Highway 43, leading to the start of an extraordinary bond between two strangers. Mike Phung, an Oregon City man and part-time Uber driver, was en route to Lake Oswego when a head-on collision occurred right in front of him. The incident, captured on his dashcam, initiated a series of events that underscores the impact of quick thinking and bravery in the face of adversity.

A Veteran's Instincts Kick In

Phung, a veteran combat medic with tours in Iraq, found his training reflexively kick in amidst the chaos. Despite nursing a broken arm, he rushed towards the flaming wreckages of a BMW and a Subaru, the latter driven by Holly Morris. With the Subaru's doors jammed, Morris was trapped and screaming in pain. Phung, alongside others, managed to extricate Morris from the imminent danger, showcasing an exceptional presence of mind and courage.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office attributed the crash to slick conditions, noting the Subaru's loss of control and subsequent collision with a guardrail. Morris was transported to OHSU with critical injuries, facing a long recovery without close family nearby. Yet, Phung's involvement didn't end with the rescue. Learning of Morris's situation, he visited her in the hospital, beginning what would become a deep and supportive friendship.

Beyond the Rescue

Phung's continued support during Morris's hospital stay, including celebrating her birthday and including her in family holiday celebrations, highlights a profound sense of community and compassion. Morris, now affectionately known as "Auntie Holly" to Phung's family, regards him as her guardian angel. Her recovery, though slow, is buoyed by the gratitude she holds for Phung's selfless actions.

In recognition of his bravery, the Lake Oswego Police Department recently awarded Phung their Community Service Award, a testament to his heroic act and its lasting impact on Morris's life.

This incident not only showcases the best of human empathy and action in times of crisis but also presents an opportunity to reflect on the legal aspects surrounding road accidents. The unfortunate passing of a loved one in a car accident that was not their fault can raise legal issues including wrongful death claims in addition to claims for negligence or other claims.
